{"id":209,"date":"2011-06-26T07:47:17","date_gmt":"2011-06-26T07:47:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mrhebrew.com\/?p=209"},"modified":"2011-06-25T15:00:14","modified_gmt":"2011-06-25T15:00:14","slug":"service-of-the-heart-midrash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mrhebrew.com\/?p=209","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Service of the Heart&#8221; Midrash"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_212\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Siddur_with_Tzitzit.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-212\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-212\" title=\"Siddur_with_Tzitzit\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Siddur_with_Tzitzit-300x222.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"222\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mrhebrew.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Siddur_with_Tzitzit-300x222.gif 300w, https:\/\/mrhebrew.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Siddur_with_Tzitzit.gif 634w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-212\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Siddur (Prayerbook) with Tzitzit (Fringes of Prayer Shawl)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The following verse is one of the paragraphs of the Shema, said twice per day in Jewish liturgy:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Deuteronomy 11:13-15\u00a0\u00a0 13 And it shall come to pass, if ye shall hearken diligently unto my commandments which I command you this day, to love the LORD your God, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul,\u00a0 14 That I will give you the rain of your land in his due season, the first rain and the latter rain, that thou mayest gather in thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil.\u00a0 15 And I will send grass in thy fields for thy cattle, that thou mayest eat and be full.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Midrash &#8220;Sifre Deut., 80a, Section 41) defines &#8220;service of the heart&#8221;:\u00a0 &#8220;And to serve him (Deut 11:13):\u00a0 This refers to prayer.\u00a0 You might say, &#8220;This refers to prayer (according to you), but might it not refer to (Temple) service?&#8221; (The answer is no.)
